The 7 Habits of a Highly Effective Blog

Your blog is a highly personal refection of you and your company. Effectively communicating your ideas and building relationships requires planning, consistency and time.

As a facilitator of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, it occurred to me that the principles I incorporate in my daily relationships also apply to building relationships online.

The principles of Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People apply brilliantly to building strong relationships via blogs.

1. Be Proactive

Set goals and commit yourself to being consistent in your daily or weekly blog postings. Frequent posting creates dialogue that invites readers to return. It will increase the "stickiness", attracting returning visitors.

2. Begin With the End in Mind

Determine your purpose and state your mission as you start your blog. Knowing your "mission" will help you accomplish more and stay on track.

3. Put First Things First

Develop content based on values and principles.
Write from your values and principles. Credibility counts, so be honest. Keep your own standards high as you develop a "voice" for your communication.

4. Think Win/Win

Be an expert and resource. Comb the internet for usable links, pictures and video to share. Linking to other blogs allow your readers to expand their realm of knowledge and experience beyond what you can offer. Your blog should not be a sales pitch but a resource.

5a. Seek First to Understand...

Encourage your readers to comment on your blog postings. Allow them to air their own view whether or not they agree with you. Foster an open forum where everyone can participate.

5b. Then to be understood.

Addressing reader feedback is your opportunity to gain trust and turn your blog into a virtual community and platform for exchanging of ideas, views and opinions. By creating a community of respect, problems can be solved in a way that wouldn't otherwise be possible. The refining of an idea by many can lead to the "magic" of social communication where 1+1=3.

6. Synergize

1+1=3. The synergy you create with your blog will lead to more relationships. It is exciting to see creativity, teamwork and the opportunity for developing customers, business partners and contacts.

7. Sharpen the Saw

Keep learning. Incorporate new things. Have your readers contribute. Shake things up now and then... you'll have something new and interesting to bring to the conversation.

TIP! Include links to your site in every blog post.
Insert URL's in each blog post which link the reader to the appropriate pages of your web site. The more inlinks you create back to your site, the more the search engines will take notice.

TIP! Your title is an important part of your post.
It's what humans read first and it's how the search engine spiders will index your blog. Your title should contain one or more words (keywords) that describe what your post and/or your blog is all about.
